I had read an article some time ago about how letterboxing is a fun, outdoor activity for kids. For those of you who don't know, letterboxing is an "intriguing pastime combining navigational skills and rubber stamp artistry in a charming treasure- hunt style outdoor quest." Nibo reminded me in a recent comment about letterboxing. So I went to letterboxing.org to explore our local options.
I picked an easy trail, one that I was already familiar with, and off we went!
Kylie was game for a good walk out in the sunshine.
It helped that we were walking next to a narrow lake with lots of ducks and geese for her to look at and quack to.
And there was a bridge with a tiny waterfall. Kylie loves bridges.
Once we crossed the bridge, we started looking for our clues:
"Four walls, a roof, and even a floor,
I look like the others except I've no door.
Beware of Wolves as you search for my site,
My neighbors may fly, but only at night."
And soon enough, Karen spotted this off the trail. The birdhouse pole on the right had Wolves 662 inscribed on the pole, hence the wolves reference. And the pole on the left had our letterbox!
DISCOVERY!
In the letterbox, was a tupperware container that held the Rock Creek Letterbox #2 stamp. The stamp was a hand-carved bat. Here I am stamping the bat into the first page of our letterbox journal book.
And then we stamped our three-star stamp into the letterbox guest book.
It was quite a success! And I think it's something Kylie will enjoy more as she gets older. She was just happy to be outside with her two moms. And she found two golf balls on the walk back to our car. That made her very happy!

I'm so happy you enjoyed yourself! I looked back through my log and found that I have the bat stamp, too! I remember it being a nice day when I walked there, too.
(If you look through the books for stamps, mine is the Pirate Bunny titled "Praedolepus" that is usually stamped in pink or green.)
What fun!! I've heard of geocaching but never this! I looked it up and sure enough there are boxes in our area.
Btw - I know I say this just about every time I visit your blog but your photos just keep getting better and better. You've become one of those gals whose blog I sit and drool over. It has been so much fun to see how much you (and Kylie!) have "grown" these past two years. Thank's so much for continuing to share your life and talents with us!

What a fantastic idea, I wish they had letterboxing in Australia...would keep the kids amused for hours :)
We geocash and the boys love it- but I have never heard of letter boxing- I will check it out.
Glad you were able to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
