I finally have a better camera...a canon digital rebel. How do you blur out the background like that one picture!?

Hi Bethany,

Thank you for comments and congratulations on your new camera!

I shot the blurred background pictures with my camera on manual at f2.2 and a shutter speed of 400. This is how I blur the background: First I put the camera on automatic, focus and look through the camera. I press the shutter release button half-way to see the light reading. In this case, the light reading was F5. I know that if I lower my f-stop, the background will blur more. I bumped my f-stop down to f2.2 but then I have to increase the shutter speed. I increase the shutter speed until the readout on my camera showed that I was neither over or under-exposed (those little + or - lines you can see as you are looking through the camera.)

In this case, I knew I wanted a pretty blurred background, but I also think that I took the f-stop down a bit too much. If you examine the picture of Kylie looking side-ways and holding the yellow bar, look at her white shirt sleeve. You'll notice there is a bit of a halo effect. That line isn't as crisp as I wanted. I think if I had a slightly higher f-stop, say 3.0, I still would have had some nice background blur but my edges would have been better/crisper.

Also, with that lowered f-stop, I really have to concentrate on the focus. I missed a couple of really great smiles of Kylie because my focus was a bit off. Even with the higher shutter speed, I had some blur. And the camera focused on the top of her head or her shirt instead of on her face where I wanted it.

I'm still learning about photography and my camera. I still feel like a complete novice much of the time. But I know that the way to get better is to get off automatic mode and learn from my mistakes.

The last thing I'll write is that I love to tweak my photos in Photoshop. My style (if I have one) is that I love really vivid colors. The pictures of Kylie that I posted yesterday were decent but just not vivid enough for me. So I adjusted the photo in Photoshop to get the look I like.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have other questions. Good luck!

Beautiful photos, as always. Adam liked them, too, and recognized Kylie! =)

We enjoyed our playdate so much yesterday... thanks for having us over. Looking forward already to our next one! =)

seems like a lot to learn..but it wasn't all greek to me in your comment, so maybe i'm learning a little! :) :) I wish there were a class I could take locally, or you lived closer so we could go on photo field trips! :) Until then, I'll keep tinkering! Thanks!
